It's a shame that everyone picks Charmander and Bulbasaur. Squirtle deserves to travel across Kanto, too...
Red has his Mt. Silver expression already. xD And Green/Blue/Gary... looks smug, as usual... It's an amazing picture. The background is just beautiful. And you can tell that's there's rivalry between the two (if, of course, you were a complete newb and knew nothing about Pokemon). xD
this is where you are wrong! when i first played pokemon (when i was 4) i played pokemon blue and i chose squirtle because i worked out that he must have somthing to do with the cool pokemon on the front of the video game box a.k.a blastiose but i diddn't know what he was called then...

I remember those old days. I thought that Charizard was pretty scary when I was little, and Bulbasaur scared me a bit, so I picked Squirtle. Back then, when Pokemon was really popular, I was regarded as a legend because I trounced everyone. (They all picked Charmander, and I was lucky enough to know that Ice Beam was good against the few Bulbasaurs.)

I've seen lots of people pick Bulbasaur and fewer pick Squirtle, but Charmander is vastly overrated. Whenever I play through my games again, I'll either pick Bulbasaur or Squirtle... Charmander's not even all that good.

The sprites were so horrible. xD So many of the Pokemon looked unbelievably demented. Agreed. And Charizard doesn't even have that great of a design. It's just your stereotypical dragon. At least Venusaur and Blastoise look somewhat cool.

Well the reason charmander is so popular (puts on nerd glasses) is because of how the brain works, although you may remember things as he good ol days, it's the same as you have been a long time ago nad you've just forgotten it. Why re-live bad memories when you remember gen I's good ol days. When you were d, you thought Grimer was gross, and Electrode looked dumb but you forgot. Now you think we're running out of ideas even though you've always hated some pokemon over others just replace Grimer with Trubbish.
Also because Charizard is on the box, kids feel obligated to get him as a starter making him even more nostalgic, plus it's design is so simple that our mind can project whatever looks cool onto it. It gives us a simple story, a dragon and our minds put what we think are cool onto it.
Charmander and charizard is too overrated even though it can't hit hard and by the time it has a turn, it's in the poke center because of stealth rock
